Quick question, friends: Did you ever carry a bar of pure gold at the end of your outstretched arm?
Answer: No. No, you didn’t. And there are probably at least three reasons for that:
1. Bars of gold cost a lot of money.
2. Many retailers don’t accept gold bars as legal tender.
3. Gold bars are heavy, and the farther off-center you carry something heavy, the heavier it feels.
Like a gold bar, your head is also heavy. It’s one-tenth of your body’s weight. If it’s stacked up right on top of your spine, it’s pretty easy to carry around. But if it moves even a little bit off the center, it gets really burdensome, really fast. In effect, it becomes heavier the farther away from the center it rides.
Unfortunately, you can’t leave your skull at Fort Knox or back home in the safe with your tiaras. You’ll be managing it actively for the rest of your life. Oy! You need an Advil! – and/or some patient education.
I’m sure you have tried to keep your head on top of your spine. And I’m also willing to bet that it was hard to keep it there.
The cause of an off-center skull usually lies farther down in the body, usually at the hips, but sometimes as far down as the feet and ankles. Conversely, a malpositioned head can wreak havoc all the way down the body. (It turns out that everything is connected. Tell as many people as you can today – we have to get the word out.)
